Here’s a message from Gareth Aston who’s running the Cup this year:
Do you want to go flying, push yourself and your abilities a little, fly in different areas, learn something new about paragliding and then have the opportunity to sit and talk about it with your friends and peers? If the answer to these is yes, then here’s an invitation for you. Come and fly the BP Cup this year. Over the years the cup has gone from strength to strength and as the new organiser for 2008 I am particularly keen to encourage new pilots. For this reason I have introduced a cash prize for the best newcomer along with a discount for all new pilots who enter the Cup this year. The BPCup is an ideal event if you’re new to competition flying, there is a relaxed atmosphere and with some experienced pilots on hand to give advice and help, whether it is entering a task on your GPS or just general information, you don’t have to feel overwhelmed. Most of the pilots who now fly the nationals cut their teeth in the Cup and if you were to ask any of them I am confident that they would tell you they learnt a lot from it, not just about competitions but about flying as well.
To help me encourage new pilots I have instigated a couple of rule changes, these being: if you have been a winner of the BP Cup in the last 5 years or in the top 10 of the Nationals in the same time period then you can only enter the Cup as individual rounds not to win it. However the presence of experienced pilots at these events cannot be underestimated, they are fonts of knowledge and will selflessly give advice and help to any one who needs it and I think that is part of what makes the Cup such a unique event. So if you fancy some trips out this year, flying XC, learning something new, having some food and entertainment thrown in which you can enjoy with friends with the possibility of winning some cash for your troubles, why not take me up on my offer? It sounds pretty tempting to me.

AIRWAVE CLUB CHALLENGE

January 29, 2008

Just a quick update for those pilots who would like to take part in
some fun and friendly paragliding competition this year. I know it’s
difficult to imagine flyable conditions at the moment, but your club
needs you.

I’m not talking to those sky gods in the club I’m talking to you, the
“normal” pilot who would like to improve your flying skills and do a
little XC flying.

My name is Richard Cardwell, Paragliding Comp secretary for the club
and team captain for the Airwave Club Challence (formerly the British
Club challange) .

If any of you would like to join our team and support the club get in
touch. It’s a VERY relaxed format and is great fun to take part in.
The team consists of 6 pilots but due to peoples other commitments,
holidays, work, life etc we will really need a pool of pilots from
whom I can ask to come out for a weekend flying. You will get the
opportunity to fly sites in other parts of the country, usually “up
North” and with any luck we will go to the Final at Long Mynd and win
some prizes.

We finnished in 4th place last year despite only putting a maximum of
4 pilots at most rounds we entered.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

News below from the orgnisers:

I have been organising the BCC for the last year with The Stantons,
Martin and Amy doing the web and money side of things and
notwithstanding the appalling weather last year its been great fun.

Ive now got sponsorship from Markus Villinger and Bruce G at Airwave.
They are going to help with finances and prizes, so there will be lots
of goodies, rucsacs/magic bags etc available for the final in August
along with the usual cups/metalware etc. I will also have loads of
money for food/beer, and maybe even retrieve drivers. (Incidentally it
will be at LONG MYND!! either the weekend before, or the one after the
August Bank Holiday.) As such it will now be called the AIRWAVE CLUB
CHALLENGE, (not to be confused with the Airwave Challenge)

Same format as always, an entry/training level open XC competition,
with club teams of 6 and a handicap system for pilots and wings (Entry
35 pounds a team for the year.) Rounds are organised on the www.flybcc.co.uk
website, with automated email information on new rounds going to all
team captains. Last comp at the end of June, and the top 6 teams get
to the final.

Northern clubs got into the swing of things last year, the
Northumberland lot having a great time, and really competing hard,
travelling to new sites and developing XC skills.

Team captains send cheques to Amy Stanton (and a team name, email and
password)

The best value comp series on the comp scene!!
Look forward to seeing you there!!
